Saint Louis – Now a Let’s Move! City

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. A recent study put the health care costs of obesity-related diseases at $147 billion per year.

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let's Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years.

The Let’s Move! initiative is not the responsibility of any single person or organization; everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity. This includes parents, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children.

St. Louis City is a leader and active member in the Let’s Move! effort. The St. Louis City Department of Health is committed to improving the living environment for all residents. Let’s Move St. Louis represents a local chapter in the national campaign, responsible for engaging and collaborating with community partners under mutual goals that promote wellness – giving parents education and connecting them to resources to make healthy choices for their families, providing healthier foods in schools, ensuring every family has access to healthy, affordable food, and providing opportunities for children to be come more physically active.

Let’s Move STL “So You Got Moves” Expo was the kick-off event for 2012. This was the first event of its kind where 3-on-3 basketball, double dutch, hula hoops, fitness, nutrition, and health services were featured and promoted for the public to participate. The event was a success with over 400 participants and brought heightened interest to trying innovative combinations of activities to encourage individuals to start moving for better health.

Let’s Move! St. Louis directs efforts and resources to these overarching goals through community provided programs and education.
